An Australian mining company says it has found a 12.76-carat pink diamond, the largest rough pink diamond found in the country.
The rare diamond was found at Rio Tinto’s Argyle diamond mine in Western Australia’s East Kimberly region.
Estimated to be worth millions, it has been named the Argyle Pink Jubilee, and is being cut and polished in Perth.
It will be sold later this year after being shown around the world, including in New York and Hong Kong.
The process of polishing and cutting, which began in Perth on Tuesday, is expected to take about 10 days. The diamond will then be graded by a team of international experts.
More than 90% of the pink diamonds in the world come from the Argyle mine, a Rio Tinto statement said.
The Argyle Pink Jubilee is a light pink diamond, the company said. It is similar in colour to The Williamson Pink – the diamond found in Tanzania that Queen Elizabeth II received as a wedding gift and which was subsequently set into a brooch for her coronation.
A Rio Tinto spokesperson said that a diamond of this calibre was ”unprecedented”.
”It has taken 26 years of Argyle production to unearth this stone and we may never see one like this again,” said Argyle Pink Diamonds Manager Josephine Johnson.
In 2010, a rare 24.78-carat “fancy intense pink” diamond was sold for a record-breaking $46 million (£29m), the highest price ever paid for a jewel, to a well-known British dealer at an auction in Geneva.
That diamond had been in a private collection for 60 years.

Computers can tell when your daughter is pregnant. Sometimes they know even before you do. In a recent feature for The New York Times, Charles Duhigg describes how Target in the US analyses everything it knows about its customers. A young woman buying unscented lotion, a large handbag, zinc and magnesium supplements and a brightly coloured rug is likely to be pregnant. So Target dispatches coupons for baby clothes.
When a father stormed into a store complaining that his teenage daughter had received the coupons, Target was forced to apologise. But days later, he realised the store was right.
The total surveillance society, once considered a great hypothetical human experiment, is already here. We all helped build it, mostly voluntarily. And often for as little in return as fleeting amusement, or to avoid some trifling inconvenience.
Law enforcement agencies know this. Vast slabs of personal data are available to them without a warrant. Our elected politicians have allowed this because – if they’ve thought about it at all – they assumed it’s acceptable as long as no one gets to the actual contents of our communications.
Listening in on our telephone calls, for example, is a telecommunications intercept. For that, police need a warrant, and rightly so. However, to access the simple logs of those communications, the so-called metadata, such as a list of who called whom and when, the bar is set much lower – but it can be just as revealing. A middle-aged man placing a call to a young woman after visiting a motel booking website, repeated every second Thursday afternoon, is probably the payday mistress being sorted. Someone receiving a call, then making a quick series of calls to a dozen numbers, looks like a mid-level drug dealer being told the package has arrived and is contacting minions. And smartphones also report the location from which a call is made.
Meanwhile, we’re pouring streams of data about ourselves, our friends and families into the oceans of information held by online corporations who cross-reference and use it in ways we barely understand.
We know how some of this data is collected. We let retailers track our shopping list in exchange for loyalty points; companies such as Google record every online search, every map we look at, every ad we click on and every web page we visit; social networks such as Facebook cross-match what we say about ourselves with knowledge of every web page we visit that has a Facebook ”Like” button on it.
But there is also data collected in less familiar ways. Did you tag a photo with people’s names? Thanks to Facebook’s face recognition technology, you’ve now identified those people in pretty much every other photo too. You did ask first, right?
Amusing survey websites ask ”What breed of dog are you?” They’re thinly disguised psychological profiles. Did they offer to email you the results? Bingo, they know who you are and can cross-match with other survey results. Did another part of the website offer to do your horoscope? Congratulations, they have your date of birth and perhaps the location too. And who is running this site, exactly? Who are these ”partners” their privacy policy says they’ll share information with?
The companies who collect this personal information say they never share any personally identifiable information, which is taken to mean things like your name, date of birth, exact address and email address.
But there’s plenty of evidence to suggest it’s easy enough to identify individuals by putting together the available pieces. After all, there are only so many mid-40s female nurses with two teenage sons in a given postcode who love the Sydney Swans.
”While some attributes may be uniquely identifying on their own, any attribute can be identifying in combination with others,” the computer scientists Arvind Narayanan and Vitaly Shmatikov wrote last year.
They know who you are. They know what you do. They know how they can get you to change your mind – when shopping, or voting.
You could argue it’s only a problem if they pool their information, but such is the reach of Google or Facebook that they are the pool. And then there are data mining companies that buy others’ information in bulk.
The total surveillance society is already here – and we have no real idea how it’ll turn out.

Scientists in Russia have grown plants from fruit stored away in permafrost by squirrels over 30,000 years ago.The fruit was found in the banks of the Kolyma River in Siberia, a top site for people looking for mammoth bones. The Institute of Cell Biophysics team raised plants of Silene stenophylla – of the campion family – from the fruit.Writing in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), they note this is the oldest plant material by far to have been brought to life.Prior to this, the record lay with date palm seeds stored for 2,000 years at Masada in Israel. The leader of the research team, Professor David Gilichinsky, died a few days before his paper was published. In it, he and his colleagues describe finding about 70 squirrel hibernation burrows in the river bank.”All burrows were found at depths of 20-40m from the present day surface and located in layers containing bones of large mammals such as mammoth, woolly rhinoceros, bison, horse, deer, and other representatives of fauna from the age of mammoths, as well as plant remains,” they write.”The presence of vertical ice wedges demonstrates that it has been continuously frozen and never thawed.”Accordingly, the fossil burrows and their content have never been defrosted since burial and simultaneous freezing.”The squirrels appear to have stashed their store in the coldest part of their burrow, which subsequently froze permanently, presumably due to a cooling of the local climate.
Back in the lab, near Moscow, the team’s attempts to germinate mature seeds failed. The fruits grew into healthy plants, though subtly different from modern examples of the species.Eventually they found success using elements of the fruit itself, which they refer to as “placental tissue” and propagated in laboratory dishes. “This is by far the most extraordinary example of extreme longevity for material from higher plants,” commented Robin Probert, head of conservation and technology at the UK’s Millennium Seed Bank. “I’m not surprised that it’s been possible to find living material as old as this, and this is exactly where we would go looking, in permafrost and these fossilised rodent burrows with their caches of seeds. “But it is a surprise to me that they’re finding viable material from this placental tissue rather than mature seeds.” The Russian team’s theory is that the tissue cells are full of sucrose that would have formed food for the growing plants. Sugars are preservatives; they are even being researched as a way of keeping vaccines fresh in the hot climates of Africa without the need for refrigeration. So it may be that the sugar-rich cells were able to survive in a potentially viable state for so long. Silene stenophylla still grows on the Siberian tundra; and when the researchers compared modern-day plants against their resurrected cousins, they found subtle differences in the shape of petals and the sex of flowers, for reasons that are not evident. The scientists suggest in their PNAS paper that research of this kind can help in studies of evolution, and shed light on environmental conditions in past millennia. But perhaps the most enticing suggestion is that it might be possible, using the same techniques, to raise plants that are now extinct – provided that Arctic ground squirrels or some other creatures secreted away the fruit and seeds. “We’d predict that seeds would stay viable for thousands, possibly tens of thousands of years – I don’t think anyone would expect hundreds of thousands of years,” said Dr Probert. “[So] there is an opportunity to resurrect flowering plants that have gone extinct in the same way that we talk about bringing mammoths back to life, the Jurassic Park kind of idea.”

A Swedish man who says his car became trapped in deep snow in a forest the week before Christmas has been found alive and in surprisingly good condition.
The man, believed
to be Peter Skyllberg, told police that he had eaten nothing but snow for two months, but that thanks to having good clothes and a sleeping bag, he was able to stay relatively warm inside his car, even as temperatures outside fell to -30 degrees Centigrade (–22 degrees Fahrenheit.)
Skyllberg was discovered by a pair of snowmobilers, who thought they had found a crashed car and were amazed when they dug down through a meter of snow and discovered the driver lying on the back seat in his sleeping back. He was weak and emaciated and barely able to speak but is now recovering well in the hospital.

Mobile devices will outnumber humans this year, according to network firm Cisco’s latest analysis of global mobile data traffic.
By 2016 it predicts that there will be 10 billion mobile connected devices around the world.
By the same date networks will be carrying 130 exabytes of data each year, equivalent to 33 billion DVDs.
Mobile data traffic in 2011 was eight times the size of the global internet in 2000, according to the report.
Gigabyte club
The rise in data consumption is likely to cause more problems for mobile operators already struggling to cope with demand.
Currently the average smartphone uses 150 megabytes of data per month but this is expected to rise to 2.6 gigabytes by 2016, the report found.
“By 2016, 60% of mobile users – three billion people worldwide – will belong to the Gigabyte Club, each generating more than one gigabyte of mobile data traffic per month,” said Suraj Shetty, vice-president of products and solutions at Cisco.
There are various factors that are pushing data consumption ever higher.
People are using more tablet devices which are even more data-hungry than smartphones, the report found.
According to Cisco, tablet use exploded in 2011 – tripling to 34 million devices, each of which is generating over three times more traffic than smartphones. By 2016 it predicts that tablets will account for more than 10% of global mobile traffic.
Streaming video
Another factor is faster networks. 4G is currently only available for about 0.2% of mobile connections but they already account for 6% of mobile data traffic, the report said.
Using mobile data on a 4G connection generates 28% more traffic than a non-4G connection, it found.
Apple’s iPhones had a reputation for using up more bandwidth than other handsets but the study found that Android consumption is now equal to, if not higher, to iPhone consumption in the US and Western Europe.
Seb Lahtinen, from broadband news site ThinkBroadband, is unsurprised by the findings.
“Most of us use a smart phone on trains, but we still struggle to get a good signal.
“As speeds and quality increases, more users will start watching streaming videos on mobiles, which is likely to lead to an explosion in mobile traffic growth,” he said.

Babies still too small to speak
know how to make jokes and form friendships, say researchers at an Australian university who have spent two years filming the behaviour of young children.
Academics at Charles Sturt University are studying how children interact with other infants while in childcare using footage obtained from tiny cameras strapped to their heads.
The study affords a “baby’s eye view” of the world in which even simple objects such as spoons appear oversized, said Jennifer Sumsion, foundation professor of early childhood at the university.
But it also shows that children aged from six months to 18 months use sophisticated but subtle non-verbal means to make friends and make each other laugh.
“We were very, very surprised to see just how sophisticated they were in terms of their social skills, their helping skills, in making sure they were inviting other children to be part of their group,” Sumsion told AFP.
Sumsion said babies interacted with each other by making eye contact and with hand gestures and humour.
They used “little social games that you wouldn’t necessarily see unless you were looking very closely”, she said.
Examples of this included children pretending to hand another child a toy, only to snatch it away at the last minute, or babies sitting close to each other in highchairs playfully switching their drink bottles around.
In another instance caught on camera, a one-year-old girl tried to comfort a baby when she was frightened by gently placing a piece of see-through fabric over her so she could see out but feel protected.
The researchers, who analysed the baby-cam footage alongside other video shot of the children at the same time, did not force the babies to wear the cameras and they were only attached for 10 to 15 minutes at a time.
They hope the research will shed light on the secret world of babies and their experience in childcare.
“What surprised us though was the games that they were playing with each other, even at that age. It’s really very positive to see,” Sumsion said.

Music could have been an inspiration for the design of Stonehenge, according to an American researcher.
Steven Waller’s intriguing idea is that ancient Britons could have based the layout of the great monument, in part, on the way they perceived sound.
He has been able to show how two flutes played in a field can produce an auditory illusion that mimics in space the position of the henge’s pillars. He told the BBC: “My theory is that the ancient Britons, when they were hearing two pipers in a field, were experiencing sound wave interference patterns, where in certain locations as you walked around the pair of pipers, you would hear loud or quiet zones.
“If you could look at it from an overhead view, it would look like the spokes of a wheel. And, as you walk around the circle, every time you come to one of these sound-wave cancellation points, it feels like there is this massive invisible object in front of you.
“Put all this ‘vision in your mind’ together and it forms a Stonehenge-like structure.” Mr Waller is an expert in “archaeoacoustics”, which examines the role sound might have played in ancient cultures.
It is just one of a host of different topics being discussed here at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).
‘Supernatural explanations’
The La Mesa, California-based researcher said he had demonstrated the auditory henge effect using blindfolded subjects.
He took these people into a field where two pipers were playing and afterwards asked them to draw diagrams of the soundscape they had experienced.
“These people were not told anything about interference patterns or Stonehenge; they were completely naive subjects,” he recalled. “And it was very interesting when they took the blindfolds off, and after having described the presence of large structures to then discover nothing was there in the field except these two flutes – they were flabbergasted.”
Mr Waller said his ideas had been further strengthened by measurements he had made of the acoustic shadows actually cast by the Stonehenge megaliths. He found they accurately reproduced the interference pattern that would be generated by two flutes playing in the centre of the monument.
Mr Waller argued that sound its behaviour would have utterly captivated the ancients.
“People didn’t even know that sound was propagated by pressure waves until a few centuries ago,” he said. “We know that sound was a great mystery to the ancients because there are many myths about echoes being a spirit that lives in the rock and which calls back, or that thunder was caused by large birds in the sky flapping their wings. They had supernatural explanations for all these sound phenomena.”

The government of Rio de Janeiro state will distribute more than three million condoms free of charge during Brazil’s five-day carnival that begins Friday.

State health officials said their “using a condom rates 10 in harmony” campaign aims to prevent AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases, or STDs, particularly among the young.

The prophylactics will be handed out to revelers who will pack the Sambodrome to watch the dazzling parades of leading samba schools Sunday night and Monday night as well as those who attend the various dancing-and-drinking street parties across the city.

State officials will also distribute 55,000 condom cases and 160,000 leaflets with information on how to prevent STDs.

A couple in Portland, Oregon found themselves spending Valentine’s Day in jail after their bondage role-playing resulted in nine police cruisers being dispatched. Responding to reports that a naked woman was seen tied up in the back of a car with duct tape over her mouth, Portland police converged on New Seasons Market shortly after noon on Tuesday, according to KATU.
When police arrived, 26-year-old Stephanie Morgan Pelzner was still naked and bound in the car. She confirmed to authorities that she had simply been role-playing with her 31-year-old boyfriend, Nikolas Alexander Harbar.
Both were arrested and charged with disorderly conduct.
“You can’t do things that are going to create a public alarm,” Sgt. Pete Simpson told KATU. “When it starts to affect other people and the public, something like this is not okay.”
“Role-play all you want, but when you do something that is going to generate a 911 call you should probably do it at home,” he advised.
